TOWN OF MANCHESTER WATER DEPARTMENT

PRESS RELEASE

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MANCHESTER WATER CUSTOMERS

The Water Department is currently implementing a town-wide water distribution system evaluation.  The project includes development of a hydraulic computer model and long term capital improvement plan.  Fire hydrant flow and hydraulic capacity tests are required to calibrate the computer model.  The Water Department has identified twenty five (25) fire hydrants throughout town that will be used to gather this information.

The flow tests will be performed on three consecutive days beginning on Wednesday, October 11th.  The flow tests may cause low pressure and/or discoloration of water in the vicinity of the tests.  The locations for each date are indicated below.  Testing will begin at 9:00 A.M. and will continue until 4:00 P.M. or until all of the locations scheduled for that date have been completed.

The Water Department suggests that customers refrain from using water for drinking or cleaning purposes during this period to avoid bringing discolored water into the home.  Customers may wish to pre-bottle water the day before the scheduled tests to ensure they have adequate water for drinking or cooking purposes.  If water appears discolored, the customer should try to avoid using it until it clears.  This will prevent rust and sediment from being brought into the home’s system.  Discolored water should clear within several hours after the flow testing has been performed.  If your water appears discolored for an extended period of time, please contact our office at 647-3201.

If sediment does get into a customer’s hot water tank, the homeowner should wait until the water clears and then open the faucet at the bottom of the tank to drain the collected material, which will settle at the bottom.

If laundry is washed and becomes discolored, keep the laundry moist and rewash it when the water clears, adding four ounces of Cream of Tartar.  Please do not dry the wash or attempt to re-launder until the water has cleared.

We would like to thank our customers in advance for any inconvenience this testing may cause.  The information gained from this testing is vital to helping us improve our service to you.  If you have any questions concerning this testing program, please do not hesitate to contact our office between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M. at 647-3201.
