Water Dept. Leak Study
On Monday, November 2, 2009, the Town of Manchester Water Department will begin its first-ever comprehensive Town-wide leak study of the water distribution system. The purpose of the study is to find leaks in distribution pipes so they can be repaired. As a result of this procedure, the amount of “unaccounted for” water will be reduced. This will help maintain the Town’s water supply for its intended use and aid in preserving the integrity of our underground infrastructure. Long-term, a reduction in operating and maintenance costs may be realized depending on the volume of the leaks discovered.
The Water Department has engaged the consulting firm of M. E. Simpson to perform the study. The entire process is estimated to take approximately 40 days to complete. Normally the work will be performed during the day, although on busier streets it may be necessary to perform this work at night. Most of the work will occur in the street but occasionally it will be necessary to access utility easements. During the course of the study, technicians will survey the water distribution system by listening to valves, hydrants and services lines, revealing leaks using specialized detection equipment. Once a suspect area is found, the technicians will perform verification procedures to pinpoint the exact location using computerized correlation based on sound wave analysis. The consultant will provide the Town with a list of all the leaks they find and mark the pavement to indicate the exact location. The Water Department will then prepare a prioritized repair schedule to address each of the leaks based on their severity.
There are over 260 miles of pipe in the Town’s water distribution system and over 15,000 service connections. To find out more information about the Water Department, please visit our website at www.townofmanchester.org/water or call us at 860-647-3115.
