Trade Name Information
The applicant must first make an application to the Zoning Enforcement Officer in the Building Division, 647-3057. This will initiate the process, at which time the Zoning Enforcement Officer or appropriate designee will determine whether the activity described is permitted at the location requested. At this time the Zoning Enforcement Officer may identify additional requirements such as a site inspection, requirement to consult with the Fire Marshal, a requirement to seek a permit from the Building or Health Department or a reference to additional town agencies for action (example: Water & Sewer Department, Engineering Division, etc.). Upon Favorable determination a Certificate of Zoning Compliance will be issued. This certificate must be presented to the Town Clerk's office.
When the Certificate of Zoning Compliance is presented at the Town Clerk's office, it will be used to complete the Trade Name Certificate. Applicants for trade name certificates must present identification, be sworn and attest to the truth of the content of the application and will be required to sign their legal name. The fee for filing a Trade Name Certificate is $8.00. There is an additional charge of $1.00 for a certified copy (for your records). All certifications are stored in permanent electronic and hard copy files.
Please note, the trade name filing (with the Town Clerk) does not apply to:

Partnerships, if the partnership name includes the true surname of at least one of the persons composing the said partnership.

Limited Partnerships or Limited Liability Companies, which have registered with the Secretary of the State (CGS 35-1)
